Another day as a Federer fan, another tournament in 2013, another hideous loss.
But after thinking for a while I feel like this needs to be
said again: Federer will retire when he feels like goddamm retiring.
Not because you think he should, not because he’s not winning
every trophy he sets his eyes on anymore, not because he’s losing more
to people that aren’t named Nadal and Djokovic. WHEN. HE. WANTS. TO.
Today I’ve seen people claim that he’s “damaging his legacy" by
continuing to play the sport he loves. Lol okay then. It’s going to
take a truckload of controversy sixteen times the amount of Lance
Armstrong’s to damage Roger fucking Federer’s legacy.
As horribly cheesy as it sounds, sport isn’t all about the
winning. It’s about loving what you do. It’s about being excellent at
what you love. It’s about /fighting/ to become and remain a champion.
That’s what we’re seeing right now. We’re seeing Federer fighting to
remain a champion. We’re seeing him change his racquet frame and adapt
to this change in order to stay at the top of the game. We’re seeing him
shift his schedule around in order to stay ahead of the game. We’re
seeing him pick himself up from bad losses and move straight on to the
next challenge. Everything about Federer’s game right now is a fight,
and I’m hella proud to witness it.
Roger Federer doesn’t want to retire yet. I don’t want him to
retire yet. You’re foolish as hell to want this great champion to retire
now.
This old man’s still got some juice in him.
Just you wait.
