Roger Federer says running after number one ranking last year took toll on him

Roger Federer has accepted that playing too many tournaments and running after the number one ranking during the last season might took a toll on him.
Its end of first half of the season and Federer has won only one title so far. He won his first title of this year at Halle earlier this month; the longest Federer had to wait in the last 10 years to win title in any season.
Federer’s second round loss at Wimbledon has put to an end his streak of reaching at least the quarter-final of last 36 Grand Slams. This was the Swiss Maestro’s earliest loss in any tour level tournament since his first round defeat at Wimbledon in 2002.
The 31-year-old said in an interview after losing to Stakhovsky, “I have more options now than I did a year ago when I was running around trying to chase down every possible tournament and every point to get back to world number one. Maybe that, also with the Olympics last year, took its toll. I don’t know. But overall I think I have been playing actually not so bad.”
Federer played 19 tournaments during the last season, which was most by him since 2008. The Swiss Maestro was first chasing number one ranking and then trying to secure it from Novak Djokovic. Federer broke Pete Sampras’ record of most weeks as world number one but he might have burnt out his body during that course.
The Swiss star might have already realized this at the end of last season that is why he has planned to play just 16 events in this year even after including the season ending championship. He even missed Mutua Madrid Open in Miami earlier in this season to give rest to his body.

Federer is nearing 32 and it’s obvious that he needs more time to recover from month long competitive tennis now. The Swiss legend has said that he has no plans of retirement in the near future and he will bounce back after the Wimbledon debacle.
