Outspoken Bernard Tomic believes Roger Federer paid the price for overlooking Sergiy Stakhovsky in their second-round clash at Wimbledon.
The 2013 tournament started in spectacular fashion as Rafael Nadal crashed to defeat on the very first day, and the French Open champion soon saw long-time rival Federer following him out of the competition as he suffered a shock loss at the hands of Ukrainian Stakhovsky.
Those two results sent shockwaves through the men’s draw at SW19, and Tomic believes he knows why Federer is no longer in the tournament – complacency.
“I think a lot of people were happy when Nadal sort of lost,” he told reporters. “I think Roger was very happy – I think he got ahead of himself and then things turned around.
“I think the players that don't get too ahead of themselves and focus on their matches have the best chance of winning. That section of the draw is very, very good, whoever is on that side, due to Federer and Nadal losing.
“I would have loved to have been on that side, but unfortunately I have the tough one.”
One of the big talking points heading into Wimbledon was the All England Club’s decision to ban Tomic’s father from the venue completely.
John Tomic, who coaches his son, is serving an ATP ban after being charged with hitting a former practice partner of Bernard’s.
Wimbledon officials have gone one further by preventing him from even buying a ticket, and while Tomic admits he has tried to change their minds, he insists it will not hinder his campaign.
“My dad's still there,” he insisted. “As soon as I get back to the house, he tells me what I've done and what I need to do. He's still helped me a lot. He's my dad. He's still my coach. If I can pick up any advice from him, it's huge, because he knows my game the best.
“I think that's why I'm doing well, because I am listening to my dad a little more during the past few weeks.”
