Federer's preparation will take another hit: He will miss next
week's Rogers Cup in Montreal, one of the major hardcourt tuneups.
Federer made the announcement Friday on his Facebook page.
"I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week," Federer said in a statement. "It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future."
Federer has struggled with back pain following a second-round loss at Wimbledon, and two early round losses in smaller clay events after Wimbledon.
The Swiss star fell 6-3, 6-4 to Germany's Daniel Brands in the second round of the Swiss Open on July 25, the third straight tournament in which he made a startling exit.
Federer's other losses in the past month were to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky at Wimbledon and No. 114 Federico Delbonis at Hamburg, Germany.
Federer made these comments earlier this week: "I've had serious problems with the back; I had to get some anti-inflammatories in Hamburg due to the pain. "I will have to do a lot of exercises and see how it all feels. My main priority now is to fix my back. I would love to be able to train at 100 percent. I'll have to see if the rehab is enough to let me play in Montreal. If it is, I'll go; if not, then it gives me another week."
